What to expect, month by month

Every body heals at its own pace. Use this as a rough map, not a race.

Questions

Common questions

When can I start exercising after delivery?

Gentle breathing, pelvic floor squeezes and short walks can usually start within days of an uncomplicated birth. Harder exercise usually waits until your 6–8 week postnatal check, and often longer after a C-section. Always follow your doctor's advice.

My tummy still looks pregnant. Is that normal?

Yes. Your uterus takes about 6 weeks to shrink back, and many mothers have some separation of the stomach muscles (diastasis recti). Our self-check guide shows you how to check it and what helps.

Is it safe to exercise while breastfeeding?

Yes. Moderate exercise doesn't affect milk supply. Feed your baby before a workout, drink plenty of water and wear a supportive bra.

Is this only for Indian mothers?

No. We include Indian foods and traditions because many of our readers need them, but the recovery and fitness guidance works for mothers anywhere.

Does this replace my doctor or physiotherapist?

No. MotherRise is educational. Please see your doctor for your postnatal check, and a women's health physiotherapist if you have leaking, pain, heaviness or a large stomach muscle gap.
